Gold Team Sports is being launched because of what I learned from my ski racing career and building CB Sports into one of America’s best known ski apparel brands. Like many ski racers, I had a burning ambition to make the US Olympic Ski Team. I trained 4 summers in Portillo, Chile and I was able to train with many of the world’s best ski racers and while training for downhill, Dick Dorworth and I set a World’s Downhill Speed Record.
After my ski racing career, I spent 3 years in corporate America and felt that I had enough corporate experience to launch my own company in southern Vermont. I knew that to be successful I had to create unique designs. My first 2 products were incredibly well received and began our rocket ship ride. I realized that to become a ski industry leader in performance ski apparel CB Sports must support ski racing, college ski teams, ski coaches, ski business associates and VIP celebrities.
I was unable to find a factory to produce the kind of quality product that I required, so I leased some space in Bennington, Vermont that utimately became the headquaters for CB Sports, our warehouse, our first CB Sports store, and the home for 200 incredibly loyal employees who helped build CB Sports into a powerful brand.
CB Sports quickly became an industry leader with a 1,000 loyal CB dealers serviced by 10 sales representatives. The largest factor in achieving 45 million dollars in sales revenue was the brand exposure that the company received from outfitting 300 ski resorts, ski schools, ski teams, colleges, prep & high schools with their uniforms. CB Sports was also very involved with the NFL supplying 23 of the then 28 teams with Gore-Tex rain gear, side line capes and coaches jackets. The company also outfitted Dennis Conner & his America’s Cup team in 3 of his America’s Cup defenses. CB Sports was also outfitted Bobby Rahal’s team when Bobby won the 1986 Indy 500.
In 1990, I retained Merrill Lynch to accomplish a merger for CB Sports. I remained with the new company for 9 months selling my remaining shares to the company and leaving.
Retirement wasn’t for me so I moved to southern California. I spent 2 years doing consulting work assisting businesses with their brand building. During that time I helped my partner in the purchase of 2 Cold Stone Creamy ice cream businesses. We built our Seal Beach, CA store into becoming in the top five ranking out of 120 stores in the territory.
I still have a burning ambition to create, design & build a new brand. My immediate objective is to introduce some of my Gold Team Sports styles to a few select VIP retailers and ski industry leaders as soon as our samples are ready.
